Frequently Asked Questions

What tools do I need to build a bunkie?

The following tools are recommended:

  • Measuring Tape: The boards in the Bunkie Kit are pre-cut, but the measuring tape will help you confirm the size and confirm that your structure is square by measuring across two diagonals.
  • Mallet or Hammer: To properly seat the tongue and groove boards together.
  • Bubble or Laser Level: To get your foundation level and ready for the build. It is also helpful during the build to confirm boards are fully seated.
  • Cordless Drill: For screwing down floor and roof boards.
  • Ladders: For installing upper boards and for safely getting on and off the roof.
  • Optional Scaffolding: For the tallest loft models, at 15.5′, some people rent scaffolding if they are putting the roof on themselves.
  • Saw: You may need one for the trim, just to finish it off.
  • Other People: Many hands make light work. Turn the assembly of your bunkie into a fun event. Invite your family and friends over to help out and you'll be amazed at how quickly it goes together. Celebrate afterwards with food and drinks.

    • In summary, only basic tools are required to build a bunkie. Installing the final roofing material is the most challenging part of the build and is worth hiring out for the loft bunkies or ones with a steeply pitched roof unless you are confident in your abilities.

    How should I build the foundation for my bunkie?

    There are many ways to build a foundation for your bunkie, but here are three that we recommend. Because there are a variety of ways, we don't include foundation materials in the bunkie kit.

    • 1. Deck Foundation: Dig holes, pour concrete footings into concrete form tubes and build a structure like you would for a deck with pressure-treated wood. We'll provide you with detailed plans. If desired, this can be easily outsourced to a deck builder in your area.
    • 2. Floating Foundation: Some clients choose a basic floating foundation by removing topsoil, laying crushed gravel, using patio stones or deck blocks as footing, and laying 6×6 pressure treated beams across.
    • 3. Slab Foundation: Some clients install their bunkie on a level concrete slab. After pouring the concrete slab, fasten the pressure-treated floor sleepers that come with the kit to the slab using anchoring methods like Tapcons.

    We will provide detailed plans and build instructions so that you can build your foundation while the bunkie ships.

    Do I need to apply finish to the exterior or interior of my bunkie?

    We highly recommend finishing the outside of your bunkie with an exterior paint or stain from your local home improvement store. Before staining, it is a good idea to sand the surface with a 60-80 grit paper and a variable speed orbital sander in order to get a consistent finish.

    Often clients keep the interior of the bunkie natural. However, if you would like to whitewash it, you could use an interior stain.

    How can I insulate my bunkie for cold or hot weather?

    If you are interested in using your bunkie in very cold or hot weather, we recommend adding insulation to the floor and roof while you are building it.

    What are the options to insulate a bunkie roof?

    To insulate the roof and reduce heat transfer here are some options (note that these materials are not included in the bunkie kit):

    • Ice & Water Shield Roofing Underlayment adhered to the roof deck before installing asphalt shingles or metal roofing
    • Rigid Insulation installed on top of the roof deck between 2x4 or 2x2 strapping. A metal roof is then installed over the insulation and screwed into the strapping.

    How can I insulate the bunkie floor to reduce heat loss?

    Here are some options:

    • Rigid Insulation: For a deck or floating foundation, install plywood on top of the foundation. For a concrete slab, install a moisture barrier (plastic house wrap) over the concrete. The next step is to lay pressure-treated floor sleepers and cut rigid foam to install between each sleeper. You can also have rigid insulation (ie: SilveRboard) installed under the concrete slab before pouring.
    • Spray Foam: Some clients will spray foam underneath instead.
    • Bubble Foil: A layer of bubble foil can be installed across the top of the sleepers with or without rigid insulation underneath.
    How do I heat a bunkie?

    If you’re thinking of using our bunkie in the colder months we recommend adding your choice of heat source. We also recommend insulating under your roof and floor when building to keep the heat inside as much as possible. You should also caulk the exterior corner joints and around the windows and door of your bunkie. Ideas for heat sources include:

    • For Off-Grid, you can use a Wood stove or Propane Heater (with proper ventilation). Adding thermal mass (ie: bricks, stones) around a wood stove will slowly release heat during the night after the fire goes out.
    • If you have Electricity, there are many electric heater options available: Electric Fireplace, Baseboard Heater, Infrared Heater, Oil Heater, or Electric blanket

    How do I add electricity to a bunkie?

    We recommend hiring a Licensed Electrical Contractor to ensure the job is done safely and properly. A Licensed Electrical Contractor will assess how much power you need and safely install conduit, wiring, and outlets for your electricity needs. Some clients simply run an extension cord from an exterior outlet on their house.

    What are the off-grid power options?

    • Compact power storage devices that can be recharged e.g., Bluetti, Ecoflow or Jackery
    • Rechargeable lights or battery-operated lights
    • Solar panels on the roof or ground; most people opt to put the solar panels up themselves and a Licensed Electrical Contractor will do the final tie-in.
    • Small Gas Generator
    What about a bathroom?

    If you need a bathroom to go along with your bunkie cabin, this bathroom bunkie is the perfect size of approx. 34 sq ft. We recommend putting a composting toilet in it.
